Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing combat sport in the world. Revolutionised by The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), it has created martial arts icons including Royce Gracie, Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva and many UK stars including our own UFC veteran Andre Winner.

Requiring a mix of martial arts skills, techniques from striking arts such as Muay Thai and Boxing are combined with ground fighting arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Wrestling to create the most complete and explosive form of combat.

It is important to understand that MMA is a dedicated martial art in its own right and requires specialist knowledge. In 2011, Lions added two of the UK’s most experienced and successful MMA stars to the coaching team. Andre Winner and Jimmy Wallhead joined Lions, each bringing over a decade of experience in MMA and both having competed around the world on promotions including BAMMA, Cage Warriors, Bellator, KSW and the prestigious UFC.

Together, as coaches, they can be credited with producing a number of current UK fighters including now Head MMA coach and professional fighter, James Dixon. James has has since gone on to produce high-level MMA champions here at Lions Gym and continues to invest in the MMA community here in Coventry.

What kind of gear will I need for MMA training?

Initially, just bring a water bottle. Your coaches will advise you on specific equipment like gloves and wraps when it’s appropriate for your progression.

Will I be sparring immediately in classes?

No, sparring is optional and introduced only after you have developed a solid foundation in techniques and are comfortable with the basics. Safety is always the priority.

What if I'm not in the best shape? Can I still join MMA classes?

Absolutely. MMA training is an excellent way to improve your overall fitness, strength, and endurance, regardless of your current physical condition..
