Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based martial art that emphasizes takedowns, sweeps, submissions, joint locks, and chokeholds. In addition, it teaches essential skills for effective self-defense in real-world situations.
Traditionally, BJJ is practiced in the Gi (kimono), where grips play a crucial role in controlling your opponent. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that official belt grading in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is only available through Gi training. Therefore, Gi-based practice remains a fundamental part of your progression in the art.

What should I wear for my first BJJ class?
If you have a gi, that’s perfect. If not, wear comfortable athletic clothing (like a t-shirt and joggers). A traditional uniform (gi) will be needed for continued training, and we have our own Lions Gym gis in stock at reception for purchase.
Do I need any prior experience to start BJJ?
No experience is necessary. BJJ is designed to be learned from the ground up, suitable for all fitness and skill levels.
What kind of gear will I need for BJJ training?
Initially, just bring a water bottle. If the class requires a gi, the gym might have loaner gis for beginners, or you can purchase a Lions Gym gi from reception.
Will I be rolling (sparring) immediately in classes?
No, “rolling” or live sparring is introduced only after you’ve learned fundamental techniques and understand the basic movements. Safety and proper technique are always prioritized.
What if I'm not very flexible or strong? Can I still do BJJ?
Absolutely. BJJ emphasizes leverage and technique over brute strength or flexibility, making it effective for people of all body types and physical conditions.
How long does a typical BJJ class usually last?
Class durations vary, but generally, expect a session that includes warm-ups, technical instruction, drilling techniques, and often some light rolling.
What makes BJJ different from other martial arts?
BJJ focuses heavily on ground fighting and submission holds, teaching you how to control and submit an opponent using leverage and proper body mechanics.
Are there introductory or trial classes available for newcomers?
Yes we offer a 7 day free trial. It’s a great way to experience the learning environment and coaching style before committing.
