MMA – MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

ABOUT MMA

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing combat sport in the world. Revolutionised by The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), it has created martial arts icons including Royce Gracie, Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva and many UK stars including our own UFC veteran Andre Winner.

Requiring a mix of martial arts skills, techniques from striking arts such as Muay Thai and Boxing are combined with ground fighting arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Wrestling to create the most complete and explosive form of combat.

It is important to understand that MMA is a dedicated martial art in its own right and requires specialist knowledge. In 2011, Lions introduced two of the UK’s most experienced and successful MMA stars to the coaching team. Andre Winner and Jimmy Wallhead joined Lions, each bringing over a decade of experience in MMA and both having competed around the world on promotions including BAMMA, Cage Warriors, Bellator, KSW and the prestigious UFC.

Together, as coaches, they can be credited with producing a number of current UK fighters including now Head MMA coach and professional fighter, James Dixon, who has since gone on to also produce further MMA fighters here at Lions, including Coventry’s first UFC fighter, Melissa Mullins.

Lions is the only MMA academy in Coventry with the ability to offer instruction from UFC fighters, BJJ Black Belts and elite level MMA fighters, ensuring a truly authentic Mixed Martial Arts experience.

What type of training do you cover in classes?

We do a lot of technical drills, covering all aspects of MMA. A typical class will involve some movement and exercise drills to warm up before moving into the core areas:

Wrestling/Takedowns – Considered instrumental in MMA, classes will start by covering wrestling and takedowns, usually studying one specific technique combined with a chain of events that can then occur.

Submissions/GNP– Once the technique hits the ground it is important to understand the options available and when to utilise them. We will normally teach both the ground and pound elements and the submissions available.

Striking – Movement and striking are vital in MMA. With a range of styles available from our coaches, members will learn a variety of striking skills, defences and footwork.
