we all started from scratch!
You’ve clicked on this link because you’re curious, maybe a little bit nervous, and wondering what stepping into a martial arts gym for the very first time actually feels like. You’re not alone! Most people have a lot of questions before they even consider signing up for a free trial. They imagine intense training, complex moves, and perhaps even intimidating instructors.
Well, let me introduce myself. I’m Raj, and I’m the owner here at Lions Gym. I want to personally welcome you and tell you exactly what you can expect, from the moment you decide to take that first step with our free trial, all the way to stepping onto the mat. My main goal is to put your mind at ease. Because here’s the honest truth: every single person you see on our mats, from our seasoned black belts to your instructors (myself included!), started exactly where you are right now.
We understand that joining a martial arts gym can seem like a huge leap. But at Lions Gym, our community is built on growth, learning, and mutual respect. It’s a space where beginners aren’t just welcomed, they’re truly celebrated. So, let’s walk through what’s going through your head and what your experience will really be like. I promise you, it’s far less daunting than you might imagine.
"What Do I Even Need for a Trial Class?" – Simplicity is Key!
One of the first things people worry about is equipment. Do you need special gear? Expensive uniforms? Absolutely not! For your first trial class, we want you to be as comfortable and unburdened as possible.
Here’s what I recommend you wear and bring:
- Comfortable Clothing: Think about what you’d wear for a good workout at any gym.
- For Gi-based martial arts (like Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or some Karate styles): Loose-fitting, comfortable athletic wear is perfect. A t-shirt and shorts or joggers will be just fine. You’ll be moving, stretching, and potentially doing some light, controlled movements, so make sure your clothing allows for a full range of motion. We often have loaner uniforms (called “gis”) if you want to try one out, but it’s never a requirement for your first session.
- For Striking-based martial arts (like Muay Thai, Kickboxing, or Boxing): Again, a comfortable t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants/joggers are ideal. You’ll be punching, kicking, and moving, so nothing restrictive.
- A Water Bottle: You’ll be surprised how quickly you work up a sweat, even during a beginner-friendly class. Staying hydrated is important.
- A Small Towel: Handy for wiping off sweat during and after class.
- An Open Mind: This is truly the most essential item on the list. Come ready to learn, try new things, and embrace the experience.
Just a quick note on safety: please leave any jewelry at home, especially rings, necklaces, and earrings, as these can pose a risk to both yourself and your training partners. And simple hygiene, like clean hands and feet, always makes everyone more comfortable on the mats!
"What Happens When I Get There?" – A Warm Welcome Awaits!
When you first arrive at Lions Gym for your trial, you’ll be greeted by one of our friendly team members at the front desk. Just let them know you’re here for your free trial class. They’ll confirm your details, show you where the changing rooms and washrooms are, and point you towards the main training area, sometimes called the “dojo” (for traditional arts) or simply the “gym floor.”
You might see people warming up, stretching, or even doing some light drills. Don’t worry if it looks like everyone knows exactly what they’re doing – they’ve just been doing it longer! Take a moment to soak it all in. You’re entering a space dedicated to self-improvement, discipline, and shared passion.
Your instructor for the class will introduce themselves and make sure you feel comfortable. They’ll usually give you a quick orientation of the space and confirm if you have any pre-existing injuries or concerns they should be aware of. Your safety and comfort are our absolute top priorities.
"Will I Look Foolish?" – We All Started from Scratch!
This is often the biggest fear, isn’t it? Stepping onto a mat, surrounded by people who seem to know exactly what they’re doing. Let me tell you, as the owner, and someone who started as a beginner myself: nobody – and I mean nobody – expects you to be the next Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey when you walk through our doors. We know you’re a beginner.
We welcome beginners.
When the class begins, your instructor will guide you through a warm-up. This is crucial to prepare your body and prevent injuries. It might involve light cardio, stretching, and some dynamic movements. Just follow along as best you can; perfection isn’t the goal on day one.
Throughout the class, the instructor will break down techniques into small, manageable steps. They’ll demonstrate, explain, and then guide you through the movements. This isn’t about memorizing complex sequences right away; it’s about understanding the basic principles and getting your body used to new motions.
You’ll often be paired with another student for drills. Don’t worry, we’ll ensure you’re partnered with someone patient and understanding, often an experienced student who remembers what it was like to be a beginner. They’re there to help you, not to judge. Ask questions! Everyone on the mat is here to learn and grow, and that includes helping each other.
There’s no pressure to perform. The only expectation is that you show up, listen, and try your best. We’ve all been there, tripping over our own feet, forgetting a sequence, and feeling a little clumsy. That’s a normal, even celebrated, part of the journey. It’s what makes the progress so incredibly rewarding.
After the class concludes, you’ll typically cool down with some stretches. You might feel a little tired, maybe a bit sore (in a good way!), and perhaps a bit exhilarated. Take a moment to reflect on your experience.
Your instructor or a team member will be available to answer any further questions you have about the class, our programs, or membership options. This is a great opportunity to ask about class schedules, what a typical beginner’s progression looks like, or anything else on your mind. We don’t believe in high-pressure sales tactics. We encourage you to take your time, process the experience, and decide if Lions Gym feels like the right fit for you.
"Is It All About Fighting?" – The Journey is Yours, Not Ours
This is another common misconception. While martial arts certainly teach self-defense, for many, it’s about so much more than combat or competition.
At Lions Gym, there is absolutely no expectation for you to compete. Zero. Nil. Nada.
Many people find incredible joy and fitness in martial arts without ever stepping into a competition ring or cage. If your goal is to:
- Get fit and improve your physical health.
- Learn practical self-defense skills for peace of mind.
- Challenge your mind and body in new ways.
- Relieve stress and improve your mental well-being.
- Meet new people and build a supportive community.
Then you are in the perfect place. We have members who train purely for these reasons, and their dedication is just as valued as anyone who chooses to compete. Competition is a personal choice, an advanced path for those who are drawn to it. If you discover that competitive spark later, we’ll be here to support you wholeheartedly, but it’s never a prerequisite for being a valued member of our martial arts family.
Beyond the Kicks and Punches: What You'll Gain
While you’ll definitely get a fantastic workout and learn practical skills, the benefits of martial arts extend far beyond the physical. During your trial, you’ll start to experience the unique atmosphere that sets martial arts apart from a regular gym:
- Discipline and Focus: Learning techniques requires intense concentration, which often translates into improved focus in other areas of your life.
- Confidence: Every successful movement, every technique you grasp, builds your self-belief. You’ll find yourself standing a little taller, moving with more purpose.
- Stress Relief: There’s something incredibly therapeutic about channeling your energy into a physical challenge. The mat becomes a place where you can leave the day’s worries behind.
- Community: This is perhaps the most profound benefit. You’ll be surrounded by people who are all on their own journey of self-improvement. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support. You’ll make friends, find training partners, and become part of a welcoming “family” that cheers each other on.
Ready to Try? here's our promise
At Lions Gym, our promise to every beginner is simple: we will provide a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment for you to learn and grow. We will meet you where you are, patiently guide you through the fundamentals, and celebrate every small victory along your journey.
So, whether you’re looking for a new way to stay active, hoping to build confidence, or simply curious about the discipline of martial arts, I genuinely hope you’ll take that first step. Your journey starts here, and we can’t wait to welcome you to the mat.

What ages do you accept at Lions?
Our adult classes are available to all over 16’s, although under 18’s will need parental consent to participate. There is no maximum age limit for our classes as we believe everyone can benefit from training martial arts both physically and mentally.
I am a complete beginner, is that OK?
Absolutely, our classes are designed to accommodate all levels of experience and fitness levels.
What type of training do you cover in classes?
We do a lot of technical drills, covering all aspects of MMA. A typical class will involve some movement and exercise drills to warm up before moving into the core areas:
Wrestling/Takedowns – Considered instrumental in MMA, classes will start by covering wrestling and takedowns, usually studying one specific technique combined with a chain of events that can then occur.
Submissions/GNP– Once the technique hits the ground it is important to understand the options available and when to utilise them. We will normally teach both the ground and pound elements and the submissions available.
Striking – Movement and striking are vital in MMA. With a range of styles available from our coaches, members will learn a variety of striking skills, defences and footwork.
Are there any rules I should follow in class?
Will I need any uniform or equipment?
